Acupuncture

A system of complementary medicine that involves pricking the skin or tissues with fine needles, used to alleviate pain and to treat various physical, mental and emotional conditions.  Originating in ancient China, Acupuncture is now widely practiced in the West.

Cupping

Cupping is one of the oldest methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine,  in which a local suction is created on the skin by applying a cup (glass usually) which has been heated.  By promoting blood flow (reduce stagnation within the body) in order to promote healing.   There are various forms of cupping including "fixed or dry", "moving", "flash" and "pricking cupping."  Cupping is indicated in many pain syndromes and most patients find it is an invigorating treatment that eases tension.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves the burning of mugwort, a small, spongy herb, over different areas of the body to facilitate healing. Moxibustion has been used throughout Asia for thousands of years; in fact, the actual Chinese character for acupuncture, translated literally, means "acupuncture-moxibustion." The purpose of moxibustion, as with most forms of traditional Chinese medicine, is to strengthen the blood, stimulate the flow of qi, and maintain general health.  Moxibustion is used on people who have a cold or stagnant condition.  The burning of moxa is believed to expel cold and warm the meridians, which leads to smoother flow of blood and qi. In Western medicine, moxibustion has successfully been used to turn breech babies into a normal head-down position prior to childbirth.

"Healthcare from a different point of view"

"The World Health Organization has recognized acupuncture as effective in treating mild to moderate depression."

"I get a lot of the ideas when I'm resting - either when I'm meditating or getting some kind of work done on my back, like physical therapy or acupuncture. That's where I get my best ideas, maybe because I'm balancing my body."
