Frequently Asked Questions

Question:  What kinds of conditions are appropriately treated with acupuncture?

Answer: An acupuncturist may be consulted for specific symptoms and conditions such as pain (back, shoulder, neck, etc), insomnia, anxiety, arthritis, asthma, migraine, menstrual disorders, intestinal disorders, addiction and a plethora of other conditions.

There has been extensive practice and research that has evidenced that acupuncture is effective in helping patients .  Acupuncture does more than simply relieve the symptoms. The aim of acupuncture is to treat the whole patient and restore balance between the whole body. Many people also have acupuncture as a preventative treatment, which is the most important benefit of this medicine.

Question: How many treatments will I need?

Answer: Usually, a series of treatments are necessary to resolve a condition.   However, how a patient responds to treatment can vary from person to person - even if for the same condition.    In addition,  patients have different reasons for seeking out acupuncture treatment.  Some patients simply want treatment until their symptoms are relieved, others want preventative care to stay healthy while others want something in between.  How long you choose to receive the benefits of Acupuncture treatment is up to you.  Each case and condition is treated individually. An evaluation is required to determine requirements. Treatments can be between 45 to 90 minutes in length with the first consultation usually lasting the longest. We offer FREE 10-15 consulations to see if you are a candidate for Acupuncture treatment and ask questions specific to your condition.

Question: Does acupuncture treatment hurt?

Answer: Most patients have stated that there is little or no pain.  Again though every patient is different.   In addition, some treatments can be or may need to  vigorous at times and other times can be very relaxing.  It depends on the patients treatment requirements.   Typically however, very fine needles are used so discomfort is mitigated.   Throughout your treatments everything is explained so you know what to expect.   Communication between patient and acupuncturist is clear.

Question:   Do I need a referral from my Medical Doctor to get acupuncture?

Answer: It is advisable to always inform your physician about any treatment that you are seeking and it is also very important to have a list of medications and supplements that you are taking available during your first consultation with your acupuncturist.

While our clinic does NOT require a referral for you to seek treatment please check with your insurance plans to see if this is a requirement.  Most progressive or newer plans cover acupuncture and do NOT require a referral from a M.D. in order to pay for acupuncture treatment.   If you are unsure check beforehand if that is important to your decision to seek care.
